•Discussion:
1.Why does manga appeal to you?
-Original ideas, relatable characters, creative authors, short and easy to read, mature themes and content, epic stories, artwork
2.Why do you think people can read multiple genres of manga?
-Many manga have more than one genre in the story. Example: Rurouni Kenshin has action, but also romance and comedy
-American romance movies usually do not have other genres.
-The mixing of genres surprises and intrigues readers.
-Mixing of genres helps readers branch out to other genres.
•Top 6 Manga as of 2004
1.Case Closed
2.Doremon
3.Dragon Ball
4.Golgo 13
5.One Piece
6.Slam Dunk
3.Why do you think these are the top? Why so long going?
- With Case Closed it’s a mystery with an overall mystery and episodic mysteries.
-Because the overall plot is unresolved.
-Readers need for resolution.
-Case Closed is like CSI and gets people into Sherlock Holmes.
-Dragon Ball always has new and bigger villains.
-Battles span many episodes, another need for resolution.
-Economic: People still buy the series so might as well continue and drag it out.
4.Favorite series and why?
-Actual research involved, (Full Metal Alchemist) history, learn from the manga.
5.Left to Right? Right to Left? Why the change?
-Readers want aunthenticity and want it to be special, different from American comics.
6.Sub or Dub?
-American voice actors are not as popular as Japanese VA’s in Japan.
-Not a priority for Americans to match Japan’s voices.
- Americans try to make it different, more creative and accessible for an American audience.
7.Is Anime a subdivision or all its own?
- Depends on the topic.
-Full Metal Alchemist able to stand on its own even though it has a manga series.
-Kinda like the book vs. movie.
8.Art? Can you read the manga if the art is different?
-No, throws the reader’s attention off, but some scene can draw you in.
9.What makes you love/hate villains?
-They do something you hate, but act very calm and cool while doing it.
