I've made up a list of fun manga genres that I've collected from around the web. You've probably heard of most of them, but there's a few that might be new. Feel free to correct me or add anything. Some of these were so self explanatory that it was difficult to define properly. Oh, I also took a few liberties and defined shoujo/shounen-ai as well as shota/loli con by myself.
The Genre List
Action- a genre of manga whose focus is on the action sequences, and story/character development is secondary.
Adult- manga that contains extended scenes of graphic violence or sex.
Adventure- a story takes place while the character(s) are on a journey.
Comedy- a genre of manga that is light hearted and humorous.
Fantasy- manga that contains magic or that is set in a world that has magical/fantastical elements.
Hentai- manga whose story is primarily focused on sex, usually explicit/graphic in nature.
Historical- a genre of manga where the story is based off an event in history, though creative liberties are usually taken to make the content more appealing to the reader.
Horror- manga that usually deals with supernatural elements with the intent to frighten the reader.
Josei- a manga that deals with more realistic romance. Usually the content is more mature, and is usually targeted to women between the ages of 18-30.
Lolicon (Lolita complex)- manga in which one (or more) character(s) has an attraction to a girl who is under the age of consent.
Mecha- manga whose primary focus is on giant robots.
Mystery- a story in which the main character(s) try to find a solution for an unexplained incident.
Romance- the central focus is on the romance between characters.
School Life- the setting and storylines deal with school life and/or the school setting.
Sci-fi (science fiction)- manga that contains elements of advancements in the sciences and technology.
Seinen- manga that is similar in many ways to the adult genre, intended for men ranging from ages 18-30.
Shotacon- manga in which on (or more) characters(s) has an attraction to a boy who is under the age of consent.
Shoujo- manga mainly targeted at girls that often times contains romance.
Shoujo-ai- a manga whose primary focus is on the romance between two females.
Shounen- manga mainly targeted at boys, usually having an action element.
Shounen-ai- a manga whose primary focus is on the romance between two males.
Slice of Life- the story centered around a character’s day to day problems that could actually happen in real life.
Sports- manga that have storylines about sports.
Yaoi- a manga that contains sex between two men. It usually has more a focus on the sexual relations than shounen-ai does.
Yuri- a manga that contains sex between two women. It usually has more a focus on the sexual relations that shoujo-ai does.
